How vaping can help you quit smoking

2

If your new year`s resolution is to quit smoking but you`re not quite sure how you`re going to do it, one way is to replace your cigarettes with a vape. There are a number of different aids out there to help you stop smoking but transitioning to nicotine replacement therapy has been shown to be the most effective. The nicotine within cigarettes is highly addictive and many may find it difficult to quit smoking cold turkey. However replacing cigarettes with a vape is an ideal replacement as you can choose the nicotine strength from 0mg to 18mg.

You could also opt for nicotine patches, mints or chewing gum – however you might find a vape is the perfect answer as vaping resembles the way you smoke.

What is vaping?

A vape, or E-Cigarette, is a battery powered device that you hold similar to a cigarette and which contains a pod filled with e-liquid including nicotine, flavourings and chemicals.

You can choose from freebase 10ml e-liquid where you can select the nicotine strength or shortfills, which are nicotine free but have space in each bottle to allow you to add your 10ml nic salts or diy your own mix with concentrates. The liquid is heated into a vapour allowing you to consume nicotine without the harmful side effects of tar and smoke. It sounds simple but in fact vaping is quite complex as there are a huge array of vape kits, tanks and e-liquids available, all designed to meet a wide variety of consumer needs.

For example, there are vapes that will replicate different types of draw or produce different amounts of vapour, so depending on what you are used to smoking, there will be vaping equipment to suit your needs.

Figures collected by the Office for National Statistics showed that in 2020, 6.4% of the UK population were vapers, a figure that is at its highest since records began. Of course, there are still more people who smoke, but other than a temporary rise brought on during lockdown, the number of smokers continues to decrease as people become more health conscious, aware of the alternatives and try to avoid the extra expense caused by the smoking tax which was implemented on 28 October 2021.

How do you get started?

If you are really serious about quitting smoking, or you are part way through your journey but feel like vaping could be for you, then the best advice is to find a good vape supplier. Whilst e-cigarettes expose you to far less harmful substances and toxins than smoking, it`s also important that you know or trust where the e-liquid comes from so you are not putting unknown chemicals into your body. It is therefore advisable to find a reputable vape store; either a physical store or online. Finding a good vape shop might be helpful in many ways through your quitting smoking journey, including:

• Providing advice on the best starter vape kits and finding the right vape to replicate your smoking style and habits

• Being transparent about the ingredients used and the amount of nicotine included

• Helping you to access the latest products and flavours to keep you interested and help you stick to your plan

How can the NHS help?

In 2021 it was announced that e-cigarettes may soon be available in England on the NHS to help people stop smoking tobacco products. The UK is already seen as the world leader in tobacco harm reduction and by being continually progressive with vape policies, will shortly be the first country in the world to prescribe e-cigarettes as a medical product.

E-cigarettes are considered the number one aid to help smokers quit, so making them available on the NHS could ensure that quitting smoking is accessible to everyone, regardless of their location, background or budget.

The NHS stop smoking service can also provide support to those looking to quit smoking and includes a free national helpline, appointments with stop smoking advisors and advice on stop smoking aids.

Before quitting smoking or undergoing any kind of nicotine replacement therapy it is advisable to seek medical advice, particularly if you have heart, liver or kidney problems.

At the end of the day, the sooner you quit smoking, the sooner you can start to enjoy the health benefits as stated by the NHS. This includes an improved sense of taste and smell after 48 hours, improved circulation after just a couple of weeks and a halved risk of heart attack compared to a smoker one year after quitting
