he hype about trendy disposable e-cigarettes reaches Switzerland

Blick reader Valeria K.* (25) was an occasional smoker and often smoked a traditional cigarette on weekends-until her younger sister, 21, introduced her to a new type of Disposable E-cigarette. "My hands, my clothes, and my hair don`t smell like smoke," said Valeria K. says, explaining her switch. He is a symbol of many. Newer types of disposable e-cigarettes are particularly popular with young people.

No tobacco is burned with e-cigarettes compared to traditional cigarettes. Instead, a liquid is heated – the resulting vapor is inhaled by the smokers. Most electronic fogs still contain nicotine. The likelihood of addiction is correspondingly high.

E-cigarettes are nothing new. But until recently, vapers had to make do with a clunky device. In recent years, however, countless new products have hit the market and are enjoying increasing popularity. Including handy disposable vapes. The Elfbar brand is especially popular among young people. E-cigarettes come in a variety of bright colors.

According to Mario Pappo, 51, president of the Swiss Vape Trade Association, "sales of disposable e-cigarettes have been increasing by 30 percent each month since the beginning of the year. They now make up 30 percent of the E-Cigarette market."

With increasing popularity, the selection of products and different flavors also grows. Valeria K. (25) says: "It reminds me of a shisha. Some are with nicotine and some without. Different strengths and brands.

According to a recent study from the United States, fruity flavors have a market share of 82 percent. So-called Ice or Cool varieties are also popular, which contain synthetic refrigerants. As a result, they produce a mint-menthol flavor and a cool smokey sensation.

Manufacturers often market e-cigarettes as an alternative to traditional cigarettes. Mario Pappo says: "In Switzerland, 10,000 people die each year from tobacco use. The goal when marketing e-cigarettes is to offer a 95 percent less harmful alternative to adult smokers."

However, electronic alternatives aren`t actually healthy either: Vapors contain toxins, nicotine is addictive, and lungs are stressful even without smoke. Prevention experts also criticize the fact that e-cigarettes are consumed not only by former smokers, but also by introducing new customers to the fag.

They say that the fruity and fresh taste in particular tempt you to consume more. Valeria K. also reports on this: "One smokes if he does not do otherwise. If I walk 50 meters to the mailbox, I won`t light a cigarette. On the other hand, the wipe is always ready in my pocket."

The Swiss Tobacco Prevention Working Group also criticizes the marketing of disposable e-cigarettes. "Bright color, with hip flavor, loaded with nicotine and other chemicals. The trendy design mainly attracts young people. Plus, they look so imperceptible that teachers and parents hardly notice them,"says Luciano Rugia, director of the Tobacco Prevention Working Group.

Improper disposal of new "disposable vapes" also pollutes the environment. Empty disposable e-cigarettes contain batteries, metals and chemical residues. It is surprising that they are so trendy among the young, environmentally conscious generation. Valeria K. Are also aware of this. But: "It`s okay. And comfortable."
